William Henry Jackson Albumen of the Royal Gorge
William Henry Jackson Albumen of the Royal Gorge in Colorado. Jackson (1843-1942) certainly led an interesting (and quite long) life. By age 19 he was already an accomplished artist but felt the need to join, as a private, Company "K" of the 12th Vermont Infantry and fight in the Civil War, including at Gettysburg. After the war and a failed romance, he headed west and got into the photography business. In 1869 he was hired by the Union Pacific Railroad to document the scenery along their routes to be used for promotion. Two years later he was invited to join a U.S. government survey of the Yellowstone region and was among the first photographers to document this area and its inhabitants. This photo of railroad tracks going through the Royal Gorge is 10" x 12.75" sight size, matted in white and framed to 21" x 22". The actual albumen photo is 10" x 13" and mounted on the original 14" x 19" card. The caption just beneath the image in the negative states "9 The Royal Gorge, W. H. Jackson & Co., Phot., Denver, Colo." Excellent condition.

Shipping: Framed - with Glass, Medium (view shipping information)
