Partly-printed Miami Exporting Company bank check, 6.25 x 2.5, filled out and signed by Harrison, “Willm Henry Harrison,” payable to D. Lynnes Esq for $35.00, no date. Matted and framed, with a portrait of Harrison, to an overall size of 12.25 x 18.25. In very good condition, with three vertical folds, two through single letters of signature, two cancellation cuts to body, lightly trimmed edges, a bit of scattered light toning and wrinkling, and slight show-through from endorsement on reverse. The Miami Exporting Company, located in Cincinnati, was the first bank chartered in Ohio by the state legislature in 1803. Responding to the public’s demands at the time to increase the amount of currency in circulation, the state of Ohio authorized the Miami Exporting Company to print paper money. By 1815, the state legislature had also chartered banks in Dayton, Steubenville, Zanesville, Chillicothe, and Marietta. After spending three years in the US Congress representing Ohio, Harrison was elected to the Ohio state senate in 1819, where he naturally would have continued work on the currency issue—as well as used the state bank. Serving until 1821, Harrison was later elected as a US senator from Ohio, serving from 1825 to 1828. An interesting check from the future ninth president of the United States.
