DS, signed “William Henry Harrison,” one page, 15.25 x 10, August 24, 1811. As governor of the Indiana Territory, Harrison orders judges to convene a murder trial for Henry Bannister in Clark County. In part: “Now there this is to require you or either of you…to hold a Court of Oyer & Terminer as the seat of Justice.” In very good condition, with intersecting folds, separation along one vertical fold, even toning, and moderate soiling and scattered staining. The white wafer seal is intact, and shows an interesting embossed vignette of a farmer chopping a tree while a buffalo walks past in the foreground.
Among Harrison’s responsibilities as governor of Indiana Territory was to secure justice for Native Americans and to acquire portions of their land. Other duties included encouraging the development of representative government in the new territory, and as evidenced here, ordering justices to conduct trials for heinous crimes. Less than three months after signing this document, he led US forces against Tecumseh's growing American Indian confederation in the Battle of Tippecanoe. Following a US victory, he was given command of the Army of the Northwest in the fall of 1812 and resigned as governor a few months later. An intriguing document signed shortly before the famed battle that helped earn Harrison his nickname...and later, the presidency.
