American publisher (1814–1899) who ran D. Appleton & Company, which published works by Lewis Carroll, Arthur Conan Doyle, Charles Darwin, and John Stuart Mill, among others. Original 2.5 x 4 carte-de-visite portrait of Appleton reading a book by Whipple of Boston, signed on the reverse in black ink, “With much respect, Wm. Appleton, Oct. 1861.” Tape remnants and light soiling to reverse, otherwise fine condition. Accompanied by an unsigned identical carte-de-visite.
