TLS signed “Wm. H. Taft,” one page, 7 x 9.25, personal letterhead, March 7, 1914. Letter to Henry Rowland, the Superintendent of the Buffalo Society of Natural Sciences; thanks Rowland for his invitation to speak, but declines. In part: “I find that I made entirely too many engagements for the past year, in addition to my regular duties at Yale, and as I have been under tremendous pressure in meeting them, I find that I must curtail them for the coming year…”

After leaving the presidency, Taft was appointed Chancellor of Law and Legal History at Yale Law School. He also served as president of the American Bar Association, wrote books and articles, and founded the League to Enforce Peace when World War I broke out in Europe. Considering these weighty academic and political responsibilities, it is not surprising that he was unable to take time to address a scientific organization.
