Scarce ALS as president signed “Wm. H. Taft,” two pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7, White House letterhead, August 19, 1911. Letter to Mrs. Nicholas Anderson in Maine. In part: “I was very glad to find the opportunity to appoint Larz. I have no doubt he will reflect credit on the country and the Administration responsible for this selection.” In fine, clean condition, with two thin stains to the second page and light mounting remnants to back of both pages.

A year earlier, Taft had visited Bar Harbor, Maine, and apparently met Mrs. Anderson, whose son—referenced here—had recently been appointed Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to Belgium. The following year, Anderson, who was a distant relative of Taft’s sister, was appointed in the same capacity to Japan. Taft was obviously correct in his prediction that his envoy would “reflect credit on the country and the Administration responsible for this selection.” Two days after sending this letter, Taft approved a joint resolution for the admission of Arizona and New Mexico as the 47th and 48th states. Taft handwritten letters as president are decidedly uncommon. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
