TLS signed “Wm. H. Taft,” one page, 8 x 10.5, Supreme Court of the United States letterhead, March 21, 1927. Marked "Personal," a letter to Edwin H. Frost, in full: "The quotation from Ben Perley Poore's article on the Smithsonian Institution does it great injustice, and is an indication of some unfounded prejudice. It was written apparently in Fillmore's Administration and during the incumbency of Joseph Henry as Secretary, a man who did more for the Smithsonian Institution than anyone else, because he was the real founder of its organization. If we could only secure a man equal to Joseph Henry in further development of the Smithsonian, the country would be blessed." In fine condition, with light toning from prior display.
