TLS signed “Wm. H. Taft,” one page, 5.25 x 8.75, War Department letterhead, June 28, 1908. Letter to John L. Cadwalader, in full: "I have received and read with much pleasure your kind letter of congratulations of June 24th, and thank you for remembering me." Taft adds to the recipient's address field, "Grand Cascapedia." Double-matted with a portrait to an overall size of 19.25 x 14.25. In very good to fine condition, with overall creasing. John Lambert Cadwalader served as United States Assistant Secretary of State from 1874 to 1877. In 1878 he became a partner of Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft, the oldest continuously operating law firm in the United States, which still carries his name. His other partners were George W. Wickersham, whom Taft appointed as US Attorney General in 1909, and Henry Taft, the president's younger brother.
