TLS signed “Wm. H. Taft,” one page, 8 x 10, Supreme Court of the United States letterhead, August 5, 1921. Letter to publisher Cyrus Curtis, in part: “I thank you for your kind congratulations upon my appointment to be Chief Justice. I am also much gratified at your expression of regret that you should lose me from the Ledger editorial staff. I have acquired a certain vanity about my editorial work that your words tickle. I know it is not what it ought tohave [sic] been, but if a man with your experience can venture to commend it, it must have been passable.” In fine condition, with light intersecting folds (minimally affecting a portion of the signature). Curtis owned Philadelphia’s premier newspaper, The Public Ledger, from 1913 until his death in 1933; Taft served as a contributing editor on the Ledger’s staff from 1918 to 1921.
