Uncommon ALS as president signed “Wm. H. Taft,” two pages, 4.5 x 7, White House letterhead, August 19, 1911. Letter to Mrs. Nicholas Anderson in Bar Harbor, Maine. In part: “I was very glad to find the opportunity to appoint Larz [Anderson]. I have no doubt he will reflect credit on the country and the Administration responsible for his selection.” In fine condition, with a couple small brushes to a few letters of text, a small area of light staining to top left corner of second page, and some small mounting remnants to reverse of both pages.
The Andersons were a prominent US family, with Larz Anderson serving as a captain during the Spanish-American War and later as assistant adjutant general of the Second Army Corps. Eventually enjoying various pursuits with his wife in Washington, D.C. and Boston, in 1911 Taft appointed Anderson minister to Belgium—the same appointment he references here. A year after this letter was sent, Larz Anderson was named US ambassador to France. Interestingly, his father, Nicholas Longworth Anderson, served as a US Army general and his great-grandfather, Colonel Richard Clough Anderson, was a founder of the Society of the Cincinnati. Great association between the Ohio-born president and one of the Buckeye State’s notable residents. Taft handwritten letters as president are decidedly scarce.
