TLS signed “Bill,” one page, 5.5 x 9, War Department letterhead, March 14, 1908. Letter to Howard C. Hollister, in full: "I have yours of March 12th. Thank you for your interest and what you have done in the matter. The matter that you speak of is one that will not down, but which can certainly be met." He adds a handwritten postscript: "Things are moving on—But of course it is a good deal of a nervous strain—Lies and Truth about one are sure to be hunted up to ones discredit—It is not pleasant." In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope.

At the time of this letter Taft was a reluctant GOP candidate for President and was unaccustomed to the smears and “lies” that came with being a candidate. His displeasure shows in this letter. After becoming President Taft appointed Hollister, his Yale classmate, to the Federal Bench.
