DS, signed “Wm. H. Taft,” one page, 11 x 8.5, no date (circa early 1900s). Unissued certificate of membership into The University Club of Washington, D.C., numbered as "972," and signed neatly at the conclusion by club president William H. Taft. The original gold foil seal remains affixed to the lower left. In very good condition, with tape stains and paper loss to the edges, in no way affecting Taft's bold signature.

The first organizational meeting of The University Club of Washington, D.C., was held at the new Willard Hotel on February 22, 1904. Sixty-six university and college alumni gathered to form The University Club, which, on the evening of March 11, 1904, elected then Secretary of War and active Club member William Howard Taft as its first president. Under Taft's guidance, the Club membership grew, and in 1907, 364 members attended the annual banquet at the Raleigh Hotel. With growth and membership pledges came the need for a larger facility, which, in 1912, was erected, with former Club President and now President of the United States, William Howard Taft, laying the ceremonial cornerstone.
