Twice-signed ALS, one page, 8 x 10, April 15, 1859. Letter to Washington bank Riggs & Co., in part: “I left…in your vault either one or two parcels containing ‘securities’ and so marked. Will you…seal them up carefully and transmit them to me by mail, addressed to me at this place.” He adds his address at the conclusion, incorporating his signature and title: “Address, ‘William H. Seward, Senator of the United States, Auburn, Cayuga Co., New York.’” In fine condition, with central vertical and horizontal folds, light soiling, and a bit of show-through from docketing to reverse. Seward served as a New York senator from 1849 until 1861, when he took office as secretary of state in Lincoln’s cabinet.
