In part, “<I>I have a misty recollection of having met you at a College Festival a long time ago, but I presume that I was unknown to you then. I have since known well that you were doing what you could to prevent the Clergy from going on to demoralize the public mind in regard to the sanctions of public laws and constitutions…For you are well aware that statesmen or legislators can carry public policy above the standard of morality inculcated by religious instructors of the People…</B></I>” Governor of New York from 1839-1842, William H. Seward served in the U.S. Senate from 1849-1861 when he became Lincoln's Secretary of State. Leonard Bacon was pastor of the First Church (Congregational) in New Haven, Connecticut. He was identified with the temperance and anti-slavery movements.
