William H. Seward Autograph Letter Signed “William H. Seward”. Two pages, 5.25” x 8”, Washington, February 15, 1858, to the publishers at D. Appleton & Co., New York. In this letter to the publishers at D. Appleton & Company, William H. Seward (1801-1872), later to become Secretary of State under Abraham Lincoln, expresses an interest in having an article about himself included in a soon to be published encyclopedia. The letter reads in part: “I have a son Mr. Frederick W. Seward at Albany who may not be altogether unwilling to inherit the little fame for good that I have won, and must feel an interest in correcting evil reports of me as far as truth will allow.” Seward, of course, is best known for his role in the Alaska Purchase (Seward's Folly). Also, Seward and the son mentioned in the letter, Frederick, were also nearly assassinated at the same moment that John Wilkes Booth assassinated Lincoln. The letter is in very good condition.

Shipping: Flat Material, Small (view shipping information)
