William Golding was an English poet, novelist and playwright, most famous for his novel Lord of the Flies.
Golding studied natural science at Oxford University for two years before changing to English literature. He had his first book, a collection of poems, published before he graduated from Oxford.
During his lifetime, Golding won many prestigious literary awards including the Booker prize in 1980, for his novel Rites of Passage and the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1983.
Golding was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1988.
This extraordinary piece consists of one page of a lengthy quotation from Lord of the Flies, which was first published in 1954. The quotation is from Chapter 1 of the novel, The Sound of the Shell.
The souvenir quotation features usual slight folds as is expected of pieces like this. Golding's autograph is shown clearly in blue ink at the bottom of the page.
This piece is a wonderfully rare example of the famous author's autograph.
