William Franklin Autograph Document Signed As Colonial Governor of New Jersey “Wm: Franklin”. Two pages, 7.5” x 12.5”, November 21, 1775, with endorsement on verso. William Franklin was the illegitimate son of Benjamin Franklin and the last Colonial Governor of New Jersey. The younger Franklin did not share his father's political views and remained staunchly loyal to the English crown. In this message to the assembly Franklin transmits the details of “an Act for striking One Hundred Thousand Pounds in Bearer of Credit, and directing the Mode of sinking the same”. The money, as directed by the King to be used for “Salaries more suitable to their respective Offices than what they now receive…to building Houses for the Residence of the Governor and the Meeting of the Legislature”. This document generally spares no chance to flatter the “Royal Master”. The document is toned and has evidence of some professional repairs to the right margin, a few areas of cockling, else very good. From the collection of Henry E. Luhrs.

Shipping: Flat Material, Small (view shipping information)
