ALS signed “Wm. Fawcett, A: G:,” one page, 7.5 x 9.5, October 6, 1783. Handwritten letter to "Lieut. Col. Ross, Deputy Adj't Gen'l at Edinburgh," with Revolutionary War-related content. In full: "The Lords of the Treasury having referr'd to my consideration, a demand lately made by Margrave of Ansbach, to a considerable amount, for Losses sustained by the capture of his foot regiments, at York Town in Virginia, I shall be much obliged to you, if you can favor me with an exact Return…together with any other information, relative to the state of their arms, accouterments, clothing, &c. which it may be in your power to give me." Addressed on the integral leaf in Fawcett's hand, and franked in the lower left, "Wm. Fawcett, Adju't Gen'l." In fine condition, with small seal-related loss and a rusty circular paperclip impression to the top. Alexander, Margrave of Brandenburg-Ansbach, earned income from hiring auxiliary troops to King George III for the American Revolutionary War. Approximately one quarter of the forces who surrendered at Yorktown were the Margrave's German troops.
