Signed book: Intruder in the Dust. First edition, first printing. NY: Random House, 1948. Hardcover with dust jacket, 5.5 x 8.25, 247 pages. Signed and inscribed on the first free end page in fountain pen to a fellow Southern writer, “For Elizabeth Spencer, from William Faulkner, Oxford, Miss., 31 Oct. 1948,” and signed again on the title page, “William Faulkner.” In the fall of 1948, Elizabeth Spencer was teaching at the University of Mississippi in Oxford, Mississippi, where William Faulkner was in residence; a mutual friend asked him to autograph this book for her, which he did. Autographic condition: fine. Book condition: VG/VG-. Born in Mississippi, Spencer published her first novel in 1948 and has since become an award-winning author best known for the 1960 novella The Light in the Piazza. Between 1948 and 1953 she worked as a creative writing instructor at the University of Mississippi in Oxford, Faulkner’s hometown. In 1949, Faulkner received the Nobel Prize in Literature for his contribution to the American novel. An extraordinary twice-signed presentation copy with an outstanding Southern writing association, this is one of the finest Faulkner books we have encountered.
