<B>William Faulkner Beer Broadside Facsimile.</B></I> (Winston-Salem, North Carolina: Palaemon Press, 1980), 9" x 12", printed on thick eggshell card stock. Number Seven in the Palaemon Press Broadside Series. Limited edition of 100 numbered copies and 26 lettered copies; this is numbered copy 68. The citizens of Oxford, Mississippi banned the sale of beer in 1944. A few years later, most of the clergymen united to extend the ban an additional five years, publishing their stance in a letter to the <I>Oxford Eagle.</B></I> This printed broadside is Faulkner's challenge to the extension of the beer ban. When the newspaper refused to publish this retort, Faulkner printed copies and employed his brothers to hand them out. In it, Faulkner sarcastically argues four main points of the clergymen's letter. Most biting of all, Faulkner agrees that the Oxford citizens are "right in taking Starkville for a model." Mississippi State University, in Starkville, is the Hatfield to Oxford's McCoy, the University of Mississippi. This comment must have raised the ire of a large segment of the Oxford citizenry devoted to opposing anything from Starkville. In the end, however, Faulkner lost when Oxford voted 480-313 to renew the ban. This copy is fine, with only a very minor wrinkle at the top left corner.
