William Fargo (1818-1881) was an American businessman who cofounded the famous express firm Wells, Fargo & Co. He served as the president of American Express from 1868 to his death in 1881.
Fargo served as the mayor of the city of Buffalo for two terms during the Civil War. He was also a director of the New York Central and Northern Pacific railroads and for a time, was the majority stockholder of the Buffalo Courier.
This certificate, which features expected stamps and cancellation holes, is for fifty shares of stock in the American Express Company. It was issued to Slocum Howland and is dated 3 February 1881.
The certificate, headed American Express Company, measures 11.5" x 7.5". It is signed at the bottom by Fargo as the company president.
