Signer of the Declaration of Independence from Rhode Island (1727–1820). ALS signed "Will'm Ellery junr," three pages on two adjoining sheets, 7.5 x 9.5, December 13, 1760. Writing from Newport, Ellery angrily denounces excuses made by William Taylor of St. Ann's, Jamaica, for not paying his bill. In part: “It greatly surprized Us that you did not pay the Bill drawn upon yourself to Captn. Stoddard agreeable to the Endorsement and that you should make such Excuses as you offered for non Payment, viz That I had Wrote you that We should not want the Money at Jamaica and that I had Money of your in mine Hands and that Rhode Island was a great Ways off. The first Reason is extremely idle and the last implicitly makes Me a Villain." In very good to fine condition, with some scattered staining, repairs to several small holes, and general wear.
