William Ellery questions a bill for a Pillory for Providence Rhode Island

William Ellery (1727-1820) Signer of the Declaration of Independence, Rhode Island Representative, Autograph Endorsement Signed, "William Ellery Cl[er]k" on the verso of a manuscript Document, one page,7.25" x 4.25", no place given [Providence, Rhode Island], April 8, 1769, a bill for "...Building a Pillere [sic] for the County of Providence and finding materials of every Kind etc... £4.10.0..." Because of the vagueness of the invoice and the large sum, Ellery notes that the lower house of the legislature "Resolved that Benjamin Man be appointed to examin[e] into the Reasonableness of the within Charge". Light soiling along folds, tipped to a larger sheet, else very good. A Fine specimen. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
