Featured in this lot is this original William Denune (1712-1750) painting titled, "Gentleman" done in Edinburgh, Scotland circa 1740. William Denune began painting portraits in Edinburgh in 1729, the same year he signed the charter for the Academy of St. Luke, the first art school in the city. He ran studios in Edinburgh and Dumfries and painted the Duke of Hamilton's portrait in 1746 among other middle-class merchants, professionals, and other clients. He passed away in 1950 in Dumfries, Scotland. The painting shows a man posing for the portrait as he looks directly towards the viewer. He is wearing a white wig and a nice button up dress coat with his right hand placed inside the jacket slightly. The painting is set in a large, intricately designed gold painted frame and features a gold colored plaque at the bottom reading, "William Denune 1712-1750, Edinburgh / Founder ARA / 'Gentleman'". The painting shows good condition for its antique age with cracking throughout but no chipping to the paint is present. The frame shows good condition as well with some fading and missing paint, cracking in the wood frame and some chips throughout. The visible art measures 28 3/4" L x 23 3/4" W, while the entire piece measures 38 1/2" L x 33 1/2" W.
