Flag officer of the United States Navy (1808–1864) who was the brother of Admiral David Dixon Porter and foster brother of Admiral David Farragut. Rare Civil War–dated original 2.25 x 4 carte-de-visite three-quarter-length portrait of Porter in naval uniform by an anonymous studio, signed and inscribed on the reverse in black ink, “Miss Wood, with the compliments of Commodore Porter, U. S. N, June 11, 1863.” In very good condition, with slight silvering to dark areas of the image and an area of dampstaining to the reverse, slightly affecting the signature. The only Porter item we have ever offered.
