This original portrait on canvas of Princess Diana is immediately recognizable to all, as it appeared on a well known collector plate produced by the Edwin M. Knowles China Co, and distributed by the Bradford Exchange. This is the very painting from which 65,000 plates were produced, and saved by admiring collectors. Until now, the artist, William Chambers, held this painting in his personal collection, along with all his originals from the collector plates series. This painting is known by the same title as the plate that bears its beautiful image: * "An Unforgettable Princess" * The plate was the eighth issue in the collection titled: * "Diana Queen of our Hearts" * The plates in this series are widely considered to be items of art, and here is an opportunity to own this one of a kind original. This painting is unusual in that it is partly a work in progress. The image used for the final plate design features Diana in an all black gown, but here we see the artist has done a portion over in white. There apparently was an idea for a change that never materialized in the final version. That makes this is a rarity. * The medium is oil on linen canvas, stretched. It is an astonishing and beautiful portrait. * Biography * Born in 1940 and raised in the Chicago area, Chambers first began his * studies at the University of Illinois He planned on majoring in * industrial design, but after realizing the field required more * engineering than he had initially thought. and desiring to be an * artist more than an engineer, he transferred to Northeastern Illinois * University earning a Bachelors of Arts Degree. From there he began his * studies and graduated from at the American Academy of Art in Chicago. * * * After graduation from the American Academy , he apprenticed for * several years at Magee Inc. a top illustration studio. He continued * his career as an illustrator working at another Jack O'Grady studios * in Chicago. While working in illustration he became more engrossed in * portrait painting. * * By 1979, he decided to strike out on his own as a portrait painter. Many people * took notice of his painting, and before long, he was approached by a consultant for the Knowles China * Company. * * Chambers had never heard of collector plates at that time, but he * quickly became a design star, appearing * on the cover of Plate World magazine and making appearances across the * country. He is a Master Signature Member in a group of only 25 artists. * * Although well known for his successes in the realm of collector * plates, Chambers is best known for his expertise as a portrait artist.
