William Butler Yeats (1865-1939)
To-Morrow, Vol. 1 No. 1.
First edition, published August 1924 by Francis Stuart and F. R. Higgins,
together with the painter Cecil Salkeld. Whilst short-lived even by the
standards of small press arts and literary journals (it only ran to two issues),
To-Morrow is notable for the number of “firsts” to its credit: this issue (No.
1) contained the first printing of W. B. Yeats’ Leda and the Swan, which Æ had
previously rejected for fear of shocking his readers; also stories by Liam
O’Flaherty, Lennox Robinson and Maude Gonne. Cecil Salkeld contributed an
illustration and loaned his name, along with Stuart’s, to an energetic editorial
actually written by Yeats (see Frank Tuohy, Yeats, Macmillan, 1976, pp 185-186).
Single sheet folded twice to form a folio-sized, eight page paper. Scarce.
€200-€300 (£100-£200 sterling approx.)
