Alamo Hero and Commandor William Barret Travis Signature. On February 24, 1836 William Barret Travis composed a letter to the world in which he would relate the situation at the Alamo, in San Antonio, Texas and express his willingness to die for his country and his freedom. The letter read as follows, "…I am besieged, by a thousand or more of the Mexicans under Santa Anna -- I have sustained a continual Bombardment & cannonade for 24 hours & have not lost a man -- The enemy has demanded a surrender at discretion, otherwise, the garrison are to be put to the sword, if the fort is taken -- I have answered the demand with a cannon shot, & our flag still waves proudly from the walls -- I shall never surrender or retreat. Then, I call on you in the name of Liberty, of patriotism, & every thing dear to the American character, to come to our aid, with all dispatch -- The enemy is receiving reinforcements daily & will no doubt increase to three or four thousand in four or five days. If this call is neglected, I am determined to sustain myself as long as possible & die like a soldier who never forgets what is due to his own honor & that of his country --VICTORY OR DEATH…"

Despite the passion and conviction in this missive, help never arrived and Travis and his men were overtaken by the Mexican Army and General Santa Anna. The Alamo has become an icon in our modern times, a symbol of freedom and sacrifice. Thousands of school children and adults visit the historic site every year hearing the story and feeling amazed at the bravery of the men who fought and died there. Travis was not just the commander of these men, but also the man whose words and deeds make the Alamo stand out as one of the most heroic and tragic events of the Texas Revolution.

The signature reads, "William Barret Travis," and measures 4" x .5". Travis signs himself in bold, dark ink, and the piece of paper is double mounted and framed in a handsome display with a picture of Travis himself. The entire piece measures, 15" x 18". Courtesy of J.
