Author, editor, politician, and leader of the Progressive movement (1868–1944), White was the face and voice of middle America. TLS boldly signed “W. A. White,” one page, 8.5 x 11, The Emporia Gazette letterhead, August 30, 1940. White writes to Mrs. Craig C. Miller of Michigan, in part: “I am supporting Wendell Willkie with all of the enthusiasm I can. I believe that President Roosevelt’s foreign policy has been on the whole good…I can’t see for the life of me why a man who disagrees with Mr. Roosevelt about one policy should not disagree with him about nine others and be supporting someone else even though on the one policy he speaks pleasantly about him. It is too much for me. I’m writing to Mr. Moses.” Intersecting folds, one passing through a single letter of the signature, and light creasing, otherwise fine condition.
