Willem van Aelst (Delft 1626- after 1686 Amsterdam)
Willem van Aelst (Delft 1626- after 1686 Amsterdam) Still Life with Nautilus Goblet, bottom right signed"Guillmo van Aelst", oil on canvas, 70,5 x 57 cm, w/ frame, (Wo).€ 35.000 - 45.000 US $ 34.650 - 44.550 Willem van Aelst, a successful and highly paid Amsterdam painter, taught Rachel Ruysch, for whose work his paintings are occasionally mistaken, as well as Maria van Oosterwyck and Ernst Stuven. Accepted into the guild at a very early age owing to his exceptional talent, Willem van Aelst left behind a large number of still lifes the chronology of which can be determined from his signed and dated works. Until 1659 he signed "Willem van aelst" following his return from Italy, however, as "Guillmo van Aelst"; evidence of the fact that the present painting originated after 1659. It shows the artist at the peak of his ability, with subtly rendered objects and fruit and flowers steeped in a silvery light. Literature: Cf.
