Willem Blaeu map of the Americas, Willem Blaeu map of the Americas,
Willem Blaeu map of the Americas, " AMERICAE NOVA TABVLA", Amsterdam, circa 1635, 22.5" x 17.0". A spectacular early rendering of the Western Hemisphere by one of Holland's foremost "Golden Age" cartographers. Of particular interest is Blaeu's treatment of the North American continent. Unlike many European cartograhers of his day, Blaeu correctly shows California as part of the mainland with the Baja peninsula being well-defined. An upper register forms a top border composed of nine birdseye views of prominent American cities such as Havana, Potosi, Mexico City and Cartegena. Flanking the map are ten fascinating panels showing indigenous peoples in native costume. The whole is meticulously engraved and tinted in vibrant colors. Light soiling along the central fold and overall slight browning. Fine condition. In gilt wooden frame, 31.5" x 26.5".
