Willamette Valley Indian Twined Basket, with rare attributed to the Umpqua or Kalapuya, approx. 6.5'' in dia. by 4'' high, ca. 1850. A rare example of Oregon twined basketry. With appraisal from Anthropological Consultants, Sebastopol, CA, who state this basket was purchased by a F.S. Quick from the Hudson Bay Co. in Seattle in the 1920s-1930s. Appraisal states, ''Attribution is based upon the principal weft material and warp material that is 'Juncus sp'. Two rows of very simple designs are twined in dyed bracken fern root. These materials are not commonly seen in the coastal weaving traditions and therefore would place the basket in the interior regions. The rim is elaborately braided. The twining pitch is up and right. There is some diagonal twining in simple design rows.'' Condition is good with considerable age. Est.: $450-$650.
