Willa Cather Signed First Edition April Twilight
Willa Cather Signed First Edition of April Twilights. (Boston: Richard G. Badger / The Gorham Press, 1903), first edition, 52 pages, paper boards with paste-down titles on cover and spine, 12mo (5.25" x 7.5"), no dust jacket. Deckled fore-edge. Signed "Given with love to Betty Swift Feb. 23 1939" by Cather underneath previous owner's inscription on front free endpaper. Housed in a custom slipcase with beige cloth boards and a green quarter-leather spine with decorative stamped binding. This is the first publication of Cather's first work, and her only book of poetry, published by a small vanity press while Cather was teaching English at a Pittsburgh high school. After mediocre sales, legend has it that Cather bought and destroyed all of the remaining copies of April Twilights. So, here's your chance to own one of the few surviving copies of Willa Cather's first published work. This first edition is about very good, with slight soiling on the boards and very little edge wear. The text is bright and clean. Clipped copy of Cather poem, "The Swedish Mother" pasted-down on rear endpapers.
