This photo by Will McBride was taken in New York in 1970. The spontaneous snapshot shows the photographer in an elevator together with Andy Warhol and is part of a series of photographs of the Pop Art artist, which McBride shot in New York. The works by the Berlin based photographer are now considered classics, which fascinate the viewer with their closeness and intimacy.



The photograph is in good condition with signs of wear. The paper is a little curled. The edges and corners show some blemishes. Distinct handling creases are visible, but mainly outside of the image. The sheet size is 30.5 x 40.5 cm.



Will McBride (b. 1931)

The American photographer and visual artist Will McBride is primarily known as a photojournalist for well-known magazines, such as Geo, Stern, Paris Match and Illustrierte. Some of his provocative photographs created scandals in the 1960s. From 1950 to 1951 McBride studied at the National Academy of Design and from 1951 to 1953 he studied art history, painting and illustration at the Syracuse University in New York City. He also took private lessons with the American painter and illustrator Norman Rockwell (1894-1978). After his stationing in Würzburg during his military service in the 1950s, he studied philology at the Free University in Berlin. Since 1959, he worked as a freelance photographer, first in Berlin, and two years later in Munich. Since 1965, he primarily worked for the advertising industry in his own photo studio. Between 1972 and 1982, McBride lived in Tuscany, creating paintings and sculptures. In the 1980s and 1990s, he worked in his photo studio in Frankfurt am Main. In 2004, McBride was awarded with the Erich Salomon Prize of the German Society for Photography for his ‘style-forming’ work. McBride currently lives and works in Berlin.
