Will Roderick James (1892 – 1942)

Joseph Ernest Nephtali Dufault, later to be known as Will James, was both an artist and writer of the American West. Born in Quebec, Canada, he departed at a young age and traveled to the United States, working and drifting, primarily as a cowboy. He served in the army and soon began selling his sketches. He is perhaps best known for writing, "Smoky the Cowhorse," for which he won the 1927 Newbery Medal. He wrote and illustrated 23 books, and his art appeared in the pages of books and periodicals, as well as illustrating the works of 1 authors. Paintings by James are held today in such collections as the Amon Carter Museum of American Art and the Gilcrease Museum. The largest number of his works is represented by the Virginia Snook Collection at the Yellowstone Art Museum in Billings, MT, where James spent the end of his life.
