Postmaster general in the Harding administration (1879–1954) who later headed the Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America, in which capacity he oversaw enforcement of the notorious “Production Code” that imposed strict censorship guidelines on all Hollywood films for decades. TLS signed “William H. Hays,” two pages, 8.5 x 11, February 8, 1927. Hays writes to J. D. Oliver in South Bend, Indiana. In part: “The campaign for the Presbyterian Service Pension Fund is not actively under way in the Middle West…. Of course, it is a vast improvement over anything the Church has attempted—and the Church has been trying for just 210 years to solve its pension problem…. I know your interest in the object is as great as anyone’s, and I know your sympathy and consequent support will be freely given when you look into the project….” In fine condition overall, with toning, light soiling, and handling wear (including file holes), and biographical clipping affixed to second page.
