Will H. Hays: 1919 Fine Typed Letter Signed Will H. Hays: Fine Letter on How to Propagate the 1919 R
Will H. Hays: Fine Letter on How to Propagate the 1919 Republican Message. Typed Letter Signed, as chairman of the Republican party, 8.5" x 11", on the letterhead of the Republican National Committee, New York City, April 21, 1919. To B. Loring Young, Speaker of the Massachusetts House. A bit of the right margin has a faint red smudge, easily trimmed or matted out; else Very Good. If you've ever wondered how Warren Harding won in a landslide in 1920, or why a man gets to be Postmaster General, this letter will help you understand. Here he suggests the propagation of the National Republican as a guide to talking points and party unity: "... I have thought that it would be a fine thing if those who are going to make speeches would get in the habit of reading this... in order that they may get the benefit of the political matter... which quotes many speeches made in House and Senate, and gives every week a great deal of interesting political information... The paper is getting into the hands of a great many thousand political workers and of course we all want it to be as effective as possible." If you're wondering, though, why Hays only stayed a year as Harding's Postmaster, and then went on to rule as Hollywood's infamous "Censorship Czar" for 20-odd years, you'll need to read something racier than this pioneering political letter. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
