British author regarded as the first British detective story writer (1824-1889). ALS, one page both sides, 5.25 x 8, personal letterhead, January 1, 1870. Letter to Henry. In full: “Thank you for your good wishes. I return them with all my heart. Come to London when you can. I go for two days to Gloucestershire next week. My next holiday I hope will be celebrated by a visit to Basset[?] Wood.” In fine condition, with intersecting folds, one through a single letter of signature, and a bit of mild feathering to signature.
