Unusual "Trapdoor Style" "Swing lock" single barrel black powder shotgun. 30 inch barrel with swing block receiver. Very nice and unusually well-balanced shotgun with nice aesthetics. These were made by Whitney Arms under the trade name Phoenix. Total production was reported as 5,000, although it is believed far less were made as they are rarely encountered. These black powder cartridge shotguns rarely have the Whitney name only "Phoenix." Their name comes from the fact that they were rebuilt 58 caliber Whitney musket barrels. Overall shape and fit and finish are very good. Swing over breech has a shell extractor when opened. Pat'd May 24, 1874. These early breech loaders were at the beginning of the cartridge era when gun makers were experimenting with different lock systems like the Swing Lock.
