This is outstanding 2 piece boxed sterling silver knife and fork in the early Whiting Indian pattern, which dates from 1874. There is a 6 1/4" long 3 tined fork and a 6 1/2" long knife or spreader. They are in a fitted box with pink satin lining. Victorians pickled their produce in the summer and ate them later with pieces such as these. Sets such as this one are pictured on page 20 of the book Sterling silver Flatware for Dining Elegance by Richard Osterberg. Of course, today the knife could be used as a master butter. The tine area of the fork and the blade of the knife are heavily gold washed. Each piece is monogrammed M or W. This set is in near mint condition, but the outside of the box is slightly worn.
