Gazette Rooms, Washington, D.C.</B></I>", August 5, 1865, to a Mr. Conway asking for help in having a book published in London at the same time it is being published in the U.S. on the subject of "<I>a picture of the South emerging from the contest into which it plunged so boastfully</B></I>". Of course he is referring to the Civil War; the book's content "<I>will include a mass of information about negro schools, negro work on the cotton plantations of the Miss. Valley, - Jeff Davis among the rest...</B></I>" Condition is fair, with uneven toning and some paper loss affects the text. <I>From the collection of Henry E.
