"Lining a vessel through Five Fingers," steamboat navigating through islands in the river. Image is 7 1/4 x 9 1/4," white single matte 11 x 14." Contrast high, focus is sharp. Copyright 1907 by photographer Frank H. Nowell (1864-1950). Mautz says "Nowell arrived in Alaska in 1886 and operated a photo studio in Nome c. 1900. He was known for photos of ships, scenes, Indians and miners. He moved his studio to Seattle in 1909. Mr. Nowell was the official photographer for the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Expedition of 1909." Whitehorse was an important center of trade and supplies during the Klondike Gold Rush. It was the terminus on the White Pass and Yukon Railway.
