Dragon fish is curving its body up a piece of big lotus leaf. What?s interesting is that a lucky boy is sitting on its body. It conveys a traditional idiom in China 望子成龙( Wang Zi Cheng Long) which means holding high hopes for one?s child. 望 Wang means Hope, Zi 子 means Child, Cheng 成 means Become, Long 龙 means Dragon. So literally 望子成龙 means hoping the child become a dragon. If you know more about Chinese dragon, you would understand this idiom better! So a dragon and a boy means holding high hopes for one's child. A legendary animal, the dragon-fish was said to be an auspicious symbol for first place in the government examinations of traditional China and was thus associated with officialdom. The dragon-fish is a recurring subject in Chinese art through the ages, and it occurs often as a motif on silver and gold objects of the T'ang dynasty (618-907). By the Liao and Ching dynasties, it became a common motif in art. A jade dragon-fish, similar to this work, was also excavated from a Liao dynasty tomb. This dragonhead fish is similar to the representation of a "makara" (or capricorn) in a Liao dynasty wall painting.
