A spectacular set of matched mid 19th century 1850's hand painted big Old Paris dinner plates. Six in all. They are very big at 10 1/8" in diameter. The plates are hand painted with the arms of the United States. A American eagle holding a red, white & blue shield clutching a olive branch and banner. depicted over a monogram (mostly worn) with a "T" as the central letter and a Z and other letters. The outside border of the plates have etched gold gilt olives and olive Leaf motifs . The plate's are marked on the back Lerosey, who had a decorating studio ( with Rihouet ) on Rue de la Paix .This plates could have been retailed by Haughwout & Dailey of New York city, exhibitors at the 1853 New York Crystal Palace Exhibition. President Franklin Pierce selected a porcelain service from them with dinner plates in the same shape in 1853, also Mary Todd Lincoln selected a White House dinner service with scalloped plates similar to this one in 1861.

The plates could have been made for Zachary Taylor. He was only in office for 16 months. This service could have been ordered for him or a gift to the president that was not finished until after his death. His presidential service was a very plane English transfer ware that in my thoughts would be too plane for a grand state dinner. The official White House china books talks about a few deferent sets of white and gold china used by Taylor. My plates are not documented as presidential porcelain in any books that I know of but it could still ...
