This is an original authentic rare c. late 1800’s to early 1900’s carved wood and painted carnival or circus frog figure. The whimsical piece shows a solid wood construction that has been expertly hand carved and shows the all original vibrant colored painted finish of a frog in an anthropomorphic stance. The statue shows a frog wearing white and blue striped dress pants with high waisted belt along with a white and yellow stripped dress shirt with orange collar. At the neck shows a very unique tadpole shaped necktie, a truly rare and important artful addition. The frog, who appears to be a ringmaster or ringleader, is also wearing a red tuxedo or suit blazer or jacket with his hands in his pockets. The tadpole tie shows a large eye and light and medium blue striped finish with curved design. The wear to this carnival statue shows its age with chipping to the paint of the on the frogs face and adornments. The right foot seems to be completely striped of paint and the raised outline of the foot is worn off. Carnival statues were used for multiple reasons and constructed for the general amusement of the community attending these events; some of these reasons are: Wall decor, memorabilia, and advertisements. This is an original piece from carnival art. Provenance: From the Bruce VanLandingham Sundog Fine Art of Bozeman, Montana collection. Measures overall 40" x 10" x 10". The piece was purchased for nearly $5,000 with a gallery price of over $12,000.
