First edition, second issue of ''Where the Wild Things Are,'' written and illustrated by Maurice Sendak. New York: Harper & Row: 1963. The story of Max sailing off to the land of the wild things was awarded the 1964 Caldecott Medal as the year's most distinguished picture book for children. The second issue dustjacket, with unclipped original $3.50 price, features the gold medal on the front cover. Moderate tearing, chipping and toning to dustjacket with intact Caldecott Medal; good condition. Book has the Library of Congress information on the title page, identifying it as a second printing. Minor smudging to 10'' x 9.25'' book with cloth backed pictorial paper boards, else near fine condition. A very nice example of an enduring children's favorite.
