What a monstrous outrage. Unusual letter, c. 1858, to "His Excellency Jno. A. King," Governor of N.Y., from "A Heavy Taxpayer," 3 pp., 3 3/4 x 6. "...There is no doubt but your Excellency has your eyes upon this sneaking attempt of a parcel of panderers, to destroy private property, under the lying garb of the public good. A rail road thru narrow streets would be to practically confiscate our property. What a monstrous outrage this: a parcel of sneaking speculators, for their own selfish ends, to take hold of my hard earnings, to tell me they are doing me good...This eternal tinkering about our property tends to unsettle its value. The very moment one has got his store or house built, then come some one to levy black mail, to be bought off...." Docketed in another hand "Broadway Rail Road." Evidence that abuse of eminent domain and urban "planning" is nothing new! Fine.
