Whaling Log Book 1859-63
"WINNERS WILL BE NOTIFIED AFTER THE AUCTION ENDS BY THE AUCTIONEER ONCE ALL BIDS HAVE BEEN PROCESSED TO DETERMINE THE WINNER FOR EACH LOT."
Incredible whaling diary, entitled on first page ''The Bark Janet's Log Book.'' Entries date from Friday, 15 July 1859 when ''Janet'' set sail in Westport, Massachusetts to Sunday, 10 May 1863 when she returned from her voyages across the Indian Ocean. Book also contains three complete whale stampings and one head even though more whale catchings were documented in the book. Each entry gives the weather, ending, in most cases, with the exact location of the vessel. Entries include in small part: ''Monday April…saw a Shoal of sperm whales 3 miles off but did not lower it being dark…trying to keep the run of the whale…at 8 lowered the boats struck and killed'' followed by three whole whale stampings and one head. ''Tuesday April 3…the other boats still in persuit of the whales…the other boat got foul line and cut at 4 got him in the fluke chain and began to cut at sunset…cleared the decks and began to boil…'' ''Wednesday Jan 16 [1861]…saw Sperm Whales going to the SW lowered the Boats at 8 struck and killed one struck another…'' ''Thursday Jan 17 Comes with two boats still in persuit struck one killed another at 4 PM got the three in the fluke chains at sunset got one out in middle part day by the other two latter part at daylight began to cut..finish cutting…'' ''Tuesday Feb 10 [1863]…the Land about 25 miles distant at 6 PM Cape Agullon [Aguilla] Light House…in the fine weather the Cape of Good Hope…'' After three days of storms, the 3 July 1861 entry notes ''the Ship leaking 200 strokes per 24 hours,'' continuing until 25 July. Diary runs 313pp. with marbled boards measuring 8'' x 12.5''. Chipped spine and foxing on endpapers. Light writing in places, though every page is legible and book internally is sound. In very good condition.
