<B>Whalebone Carving of a Hand</B></I><BR>Circa 1972<BR>Length 24 3/4 in.<BR><BR>The barren landscape of the far north provided scant resources for the Inuit. Everything in the environment was evaluated for practical applications. Whalebone was used in the making of kayaks, umiaks, sleds, and a host of tools and weapons. Its use by contemporary artists was a natural extension for this familiar material.
