<B>Whalebone Carving - Head of an Inuit Man</B></I><BR>Circa 1968<BR>Height 10 in.<BR><BR>Beginning in the 1960s the Canadian government assisted with programs to benefit the native peoples of the Northwest Territories and Arctic. They helped in the establishment of artist cooperatives in the north and the marketing of prints, soapstone sculptures, and whalebone carvings in the larger cities of the southern provinces. The success of these endeavors continues to the present.
